May 31,2009: Day 30

George had the earliest start (on the bike by 6:15) for his ride today. He wanted to take advantage of the Easterly (tail) winds (for the first time in Kansas). The forecast was for the winds to shift to mainly southerly (across winds) around 10 am. Not to mention today the temps were going to be in the 90's. He was planning for a shorter ride of about 50 miles but He decided take advantage and ride the wind, however by 1200 it turned to a 25 mph across wind. It was blowing him over, thus he stopped at 1245. He did do the most mileage per given time today for the entire trip. Man, wouldn't it be nice to have the tail winds all the time, we would be done in no time. I did not get to try out my aero bars. The plan was for us to try out the bike in the late evening when the wind usually dies down but not here in Kansas (atleast not today). We did some site seeing, Fort Larned and the old fashioned blacksmith made us a iron hook as a souvenir. We have just the place for it, in our new mud room (at home). Kansas surprisingly has more road/recreational bikers than any of the other states we have visited so far. But for some reason, its very hard to find bananas here (and MO) at the local gas stations, unlike in KY and VA.

We went from near Buhler, KS to Larned KS
Total Miles: 83
